1. Decide which list or database application to use in building the list. Candidates include the following (Nov 2001):

No Free with Filemaker 5.5 2. Consider what information you need at the top of the record. Do you need the observer's name? class? date? time of day? location?
3 Research a list of items for your checklist.
4. Decide how long and how detailed a list to use. Lists that are too long can be discouraging, while those that are too short can be useless. Consider how many fields your memo, list or database can hold.
5. Decide how best to answer (with a selection of "field type") the presence or absence of an item. Two that give people trouble are:
Checkbox - or list - these are both a set of non-exclusive choices
Radio button - this sets up an exclusive choice, such as Yes/No.
6. Try it out before entering it into the handheld, and save time!
