Recently, the fishermen have been noticing that they aren't catching as many fish as they used to. Each fisherman uses one big net to catch fish. They used to be able to fill their net with fish by the end of the day, but now their nets are only half full. What do you think they should do? srjava.util.Vectorٗ}[;IcapacityIncrementI elementCount[ elementDatat[Ljava/lang/Object;xpur[Ljava.lang.Object;Xs)lxp sq~t|Using more nets, the fishermen are able to catch almost as many fish as before. But only for a while. Now they find that even with two nets each, they can't fill their nets. They also notice that the fish they are catching are smaller than before. Could it be that the fish are just getting smaller, and can slip through the holes in the nets? What do you think they should do?sq~ uq~ sq~tSmaller holes seem to work, and the fishermen are able to catch more fish, although the fish are getting smaller and smaller. Soon, though, there aren't even many small fish. No matter what kinds of nets they try to use, the fisherman aren't able to catch fish anymore. Sadly, they all have to move away. Why do you think they couldn't catch any more fish? What else could they have done? Try the story again.sq~ uq~ ppppppppppppq~tUse nets with smaller holesxsq~tIf you realize that the fishermen can't keep taking so many fish out of the bay, go back to the beginning (Fish Story) and follow the other decision path called Cut back on fishing.sq~ uq~ ppppppppppppq~tStop fishing so muchxpppppppppq~q~t Use more netsxsq~tThe fishermen get together and decide that they must be taking too many fish out of the bay, and they need to stop fishing so much. But they need the money they get from selling fish. What can they do? Some people argue that if everybody fishes a little less, they can all stay in business. Others argue that some fishermen will have to quit and find other work. Still others wonder if there's some technological solution that they haven't thought of. What do you think they should try to do?sq~ uq~ sq~tThe fishermen get together and decide that if everybody cuts back a little on how much they fish, they'll all be a little poorer, but they'll all be able to stay fishermen. They decide that everybody should only fish with one net, four days a week. The fishermen find that they have to set up a police system, to make sure that nobody cheats and fishes more than his share. Life goes on in the village, with everyone a little poorer, but having achieved a balance with nature.sq~ uq~ ppppppppppppq~tEverybody fish lessxsq~tWhat right do some fishermen have to tell others that they have to quit? Fights break out, someone burns someone else's boats in the night, and everybody is unhappy. Nobody can agree on a fair system. Besides, what would the people who quit do for a living? Fishing is all they know how to do. Meanwhile, the fish supply keeps getting smaller. This doesn't seem like a good solution.sq~ uq~ ppppppppppppq~tMake some fishermen quitxsq~tA scientist is brought in, and he says that the problem is that the fish aren't growing fast enough. He suggests putting growth hormones in the water. A second scientist says that the town should look into what else in the bay is edible. He suggests that some fishermen might switch to harvesting kelp, or seaweed. A third scientist suggests setting up a fish farm to breed fish in tanks, instead of just catching them from the bay. Which solution, if any, sounds good to you?sq~ uq~ sq~t9The scientist creates a special growth hormone formula and dumps it in the bay. The fishermen go out fishing, and are excited to find nice big fish in their nets again. Unfortunately, the people who eat the fish also get the growth hormone inside them, and grow bigger and bigger. Soon, the town is full of giants who are demanding more and more fish to eat. No, not really. But it's dangerous to try chemical solutions like this without spending a really long time studying all of the possible effects, so the town meeting vetoes the idea of using growth hormones.sq~ uq~ ppppppppppppq~+tGrowth hormonesxsq~t
